Something in the Air!

Hi, everyone!

Since I last wrote, we’ve had two periods of extreme heat and days with unhealthy amounts of wildfire smoke in the air! That means not a lot of outdoor adventures!

Last year, when we had the wall built at the front of our lawn at the bay, Grandma moved two plants out of the way to protect them. She put them both in the herb garden. I was happy to see they both bloomed there this year! The wild sweetpeas bloomed, too!

The last weekend in June, we went to the Point to watch sunset. There were clouds. The next day, Grandma went out to weed water chestnuts and had to weed the boathouse, first!

Right after that, we had another heat wave while the painters were finishing up staining the house in Fairport! Grandma took down the hanging basket of impatiens where the birds had made a nest to get it out of the way of the painters. When I looked inside, there were eggs in the nest! We haven’t seen the birds at the nest since we put the basket back up, so I don’t think the eggs will hatch.

Fourth of July weekend was rainy! The rain stopped just long enough on Friday for us to watch the fireworks from our dock at Sodus, but the next day rained hard on and off all day. I hung out with James and Thomas and Aunt Kara and Grandpa. Grandma started a jigsaw puzzle because that’s a good thing to do on a rainy day!

It did dry out for sunset, so we watched it from the Point again.

Back in town after the holiday weekend, we were getting ready for the choir picnic! Our daylilies started blooming, but then the deer ate all the remaining flower buds! The long-range forecast called for rain, but we had perfect weather, instead! I made sure my pride said hello to some of my church friends. Uncle Steven, James, and Aunt Kara helped host, and so did we! I helped put away the drinks from the coolers the next day, too!

When we went back out to the bay afterward, we had another cloudy sunset and a cloudy sunrise. I was happy the deer weren’t eating the daylilies at the bay!

Last Tuesday, Grandma and Grandpa came out to the bay for a project! Grandma wanted to clean and restain the deck and the stairs. Grandma got the cleaning done before dinner, so we could go to sunset at the Point. There was starting to be smoke in the air! The wind was blowing smoke from Canadian and Midwest wildfires in our direction. We could see the difference in sunset at the Point.

On Wednesday we had both a heat advisory and an air quality advisory! Grandma got the deck and stairs stained anyway! Then we went back into town and she bought more yarn to make baby blankets. Do you like the colors she got?

Yesterday, we came back out to the bay to get ready for a family weekend! We bought our first local corn of the season and a nice cantelope. I helped Grandma get them ready for dinner. James, Thomas and Uncle Steven came just in time to eat and stayed overnight. We had our first s’mores fire of the season. Thomas used his Scout skills to get it started, and James demonstrated his technique for making the perfect s’more.

Today the smoke is back and it’s rainy again. Grandma baked sticky buns for breakfast. We had outside plans, but it’s another day for inside, instead!

Love,

Lion-san
