Leap Day was our last full day on Kauai. Grandma and Joe-san and I waited until after lunch to go to the beach.
There was a traffic jam of turtles on the beach! When we walked around to the other side of the beach, we saw a young monk seal, too! He had lots of scars from bites, but he was safely sleeping in the sunshine! On our way back along the beach, we saw more sea turtles trying to join the traffic jam!
We watched our last Kauai sunset from our upper lanai. The sun set right into some low clouds!
On March 1, we checked out of our resort unit right after breakfast. Then we took our recycling to Brennecke’s parking lot and went across the street to say goodbye to the beach. The late-sleeping sea turtles already had a crowd of admirers! Next we drove to Makahuena Point to look for whales. Grandma took me to the sea arch on the way. We thought we weren’t going to see whales, but Grandma spotted some big splashes as we were headed back to the car! We got our last lunch from Dim ‘N’ Den Sum. There was rain while we were driving there, but it stopped so we could eat our lunch in the Koloa park next to the food trucks.
Our first flight was from Lihue back to San Francisco. That’s mostly over the ocean! The pilot told us the weather was windy in San Francisco and landing would be “exciting”, but it wasn’t even too bumpy! Our overnight flight from San Francisco to Washington DC was delayed for almost two hours, so it was way after my bedtime before we even boarded. The outside temperature on the flight display was very hot once the engines started! We flew through sunrise before we got to Washington.
Grandma and Grandpa knew we had a long wait for our last flight to Rochester, so they arranged United Club passes for all of us. The lounge was nearly empty! We had a nice breakfast and lunch before our last flight. I could watch the rain from the lounge window! The rain was over by the time we got to Rochester. Uncle Steven picked us up and drove everybody home.
Three days later, we had a nice dry spring day! Grandma took me out in the yard to see what was growing! The snowdrops were in full bloom. My first crocus friends were blooming, too! The daffodils were coming up in the back corner and foundation plantings. Some of them already had flower buds! I was happy to see the flower buds on the rhododendron were still there!
When we were in Kauai, my new tunic wasn’t helping me sit up as well as my old one did. Grandma made some changes so it works better. She even put in a pocket so I can carry my calling cards!
I was hoping the crazy weather that Rochester had while we were away was all over! We had some nice, sunny days. Saturday, when we were at the bay, it rained! Yesterday, the rain turned to snow! When I got up this morning, the ground was covered. Now it’s warming up and the snow is melting fast. I hope that’s the last snow for this season! I’m ready for spring here!
Love,
Lion-san
That is a neat picture of the sea turtles lining up to get on shore! I think your seeing all the turtles was one of the best parts of your trip.
Welcome back to NY.
Great Aunt Betsy
I don’t believe we ever saw a turtle traffic jam on any of our visits to Poipu. What a treat – so glad you got a photo of them! I’m glad you thought the sunshine in Fairport was just as nice as the sun on Kauai, but I think I’d trade Fairport’s for Kauai’s any day! Thanks for sharing Lion-san!
