Turtles and Rainbows!

Hi, everyone!

Most of the mornings here are cloudy, so sunrise happens when the sun finally gets above the clouds!  If there are still clouds to the west when that happens, we get rainbows! This weekend was a turtle and rainbow weekend!  On Friday morning, when we walked to the beach, we saw two sea turtles.  They were both leaving when we got there!   We didn’t see any monk seals, but we did see whale spouts.  So far, we’ve seen whales every day we’ve been here!

We had lunch Friday at Kickshaws Food Truck, parked at Warehouse 3540 in Lawai.  The fish sandwich with fried banana was yummy, and so was the waffle made of tater tots!

Friday evening, we went back to Hanapepe for Art Night.  I saw my new friend Pattie again!  Last week, Grandma found a print she liked of chickens crossing the Tree Tunnel road.  Papa Dick-san and Grandma Sue left money so that Grandpa could buy it for Grandma.  Grandma isn’t sure where she will hang it yet, but she’s happy to have it!  Because it was still light when we got to Hanapepe Art Night, I wanted to watch sunset from the swinging bridge.  It was closed!  Someone told us it was damaged last year in the floods and hasn’t been repaired yet.

On Saturday morning, there was another rainbow!  We went back to the Kauai Community Farmers Market in Lihue.  We bought goat cheese from the dairy stand, then we went to get into the Midnight Bear Bakery line right away!

We bought another ciabatta to freeze and an almond croissant for lunch.  Then I made friends with a lot of vegetables I didn’t recognize!  On the way back to the resort, I stopped to mail some postcards at the Koloa post office.

It wasn’t time for lunch when we got back from the farmers market, so we walked down to the beach to look for seals and turtles.  There were SIX turtles on the beach!  One was headed back to the water, but the rest were napping.  It was hard for the beachgoers to stay away from the turtles when there were so many there!  After seeing so many turtles, I thought our almond croissant even looked a little bit like one!

There wasn’t much sunset on Saturday, but the surf at Brennecke’s Beach was fun to watch.  We got dinner again from Savage Shrimp after the sun went down.

On Sunday morning, there were three sea turtles close together on Poipu Beach!  There was another sea turtle on the spit.  After we checked on the turtles, we recycled all our cans and bottles.  I made sure everything went into the proper bin!

We drove back to Waimea to shop at Aunty Lilikoi’s for passion fruit products.  The clerk remembered me from two and four years ago!  Tilly and Moose-san sent me a list of things they wanted.  We had everything packed up to go into the mail.  It will be waiting for us when we get home!  We got the valentine special fudge and more salad dressing to eat while we’re here.

Sunday evening, we had dinner with my church friends!  They just arrived on Friday and hadn’t seen any whales yet.  While we were visiting on their lanai, we saw several whale spouts.  Then we saw a whale breach!  After that, we all went to dinner at Kukui’ula.  We got to watch sunset before we went to the restaurant!  It was after my bedtime, but I was happy to have a chance to visit with my friends!

This morning was the best rainbow yet!  There was only one sea turtle on the spit and none on the beach when we walked down to check.  It has been windy, so the surf at Brennecke’s beach was nice.  It’s harder to spot whales when there are breaking waves offshore, but we saw a few whale spouts anyway.  There was one big splash from a breaching whale, too!  So far, Grandma and Grandpa have seen at least one whale every day!

As we walked back from the beach, I took time to look at the flowers!  I think there are more in bloom now than when we arrived.  I made friends with a cattle egret, too!

Grandma and Grandpa have been busy moving to the downstairs bedroom and cleaning the upstairs area.  When we got lunch from Dim’n’Den Sum, we stopped to buy more bananas, more milk and a lei.  Then I helped Grandma cut up another pineapple.  Uncle Steven’s family will be arriving in a few hours!

Love,

Lion-san

  1. This has been a year for turtles. It is nice that you got a full rainbow. You may not get a full rainbow like that again but……It is nice that you have lots of guests coming. Always nice to have someone visiting you when you go away.

  2. Tilly and Moose-san received the postcard today 2/18/2020. You have had a really nice rainbow and lots of turtles and whales and fun adventures at the markets and art night. And great food from the food trucks and Puka Dog. Have a nice time showing Steven, Kara, James and Thomas your favorite places and your good friends on Hawaii.
