Hi, everyone!
It’s going to be September at the end of the week! We’re having some cooler weather, but it hasn’t rained in four days! The week before last, when it was warmer and rainier, Grandpa finished the outside garage project by putting down pavers next to the reinforced foundation. Now our garbage cans won’t get muddy bottoms when it rains! At Sodus, we enjoyed some pretty sunsets peeking through the rainstorm clouds.
Last Monday was the eclipse of the sun! The moon didn’t completely cover the sun where Grandma and Grandpa live, but we did have about 70% of the sun blocked. The leaves of the trees in the backyard acted like pinhole cameras, so we had a lot of images of the remaining sun crescent on the deck! I wanted my picture taken with the crescent suns, but clouds moved in and blocked the sun just as Grandma was taking my picture! In seven more years, we will have an eclipse where the sun is totally blocked by the moon where Grandma and Grandpa live. I hope we don’t have clouds then!
The end of last week, Grandma got out a jigsaw puzzle we hadn’t done before. It’s a globe of the world in three dimensions! The pieces were numbered on the back, to make it easier to build. Grandma and I started at the south pole and got all the way up to Siberia and Canada. We only had about ten pieces left to finish, but every time Grandma tried to put in a piece of the arctic circle, the piece with Japan fell out and took the South China Sea with it! That was one of the pieces specially shaped to keep the globe in shape, so we couldn’t finish the puzzle.
We were at the bay again for the weekend. The wild blackberries are ripening, so I helped Grandma pick them. Then we went to Burnap’s Farm Market to get fresh produce. I got to play on the wooden train, but I really missed having James and Thomas and Moose-san and Tilly there to play with me! We bought yummy peaches and a Cherokee purple tomato.
When we got back from the farm market, I helped Grandma shuck the corn for dinner. When we’re outside at the bay, we’ve been hearing bald eagles call to each other! Sometimes we see two eagles chasing each other, circling above the trees between our house and the neighbor to the north. When Grandma takes the kayak out, she often sees an adult bald eagle watching the bay from one of those trees! We never knew bald eagles could be so noisy!
Yesterday afternoon, I helped Grandma turn those yummy peaches into a sour cream peach pie! First we made the crust and rolled out the bottom crust to line the pie pan. Grandma did the peach peeling and slicing, so I wouldn’t get my paws messy. I helped pour the sour cream filling over the peaches before Grandma made the lattice top crust. Then I helped sprinkle cinnamon sugar on the crust before we baked it. The pie was yummy!

Wow! A puzzle of the globe would be challenging to say the least. I just had an idea. Get a balloon or ball the right size and build the puzzle around the balloon or ball.
You are so lucky to have pair of bald eagles to watch at the lake. They have made quite a comeback. There are some around here but I haven’t seen them, just heard about them and seen pictures of them.
Please save me a piece of that sour cream peach pie! Sounds so delicious.
We are enjoying locally grown peaches and sweet corn and tomatoes these days and yes, locally grown strawberries. The farm we go to for fresh fruit has a new variety of strawberries that keep on fruiting much longer than do the regular strawberry plants. So we are still getting local strawberries.
I enjoy reading your about your adventures, Lion-san.
Great Aunt Betsy.
Hi, Great Aunt Betsy! Burnap’s had strawberries too, last week, so they must be growing the same long season ones you’re seeing. August still feels like peach time to me! I’m glad you’re enjoying my adventures.
Love,
Lion-san
Joe-san watched the eclipse on the TV while waiting to see the doctor but the rest of us missed it. He decided he had a ear infection but the doctor couldn’t tell with all the wax in there. We shall miss the peach pie, but another year. Moose-san and Tilly have been busy while they have been back mostly canning! They also helped Joe-san make 70 oz of pesto!
Wow! That’s a lot of pesto!
Love,
Lion-san
Can’t stop thinking about your yummy peach pie! You’ve motivated me to buy some peaches and make some peach bread for now, and to enjoy throughout the winter. 🤗
