End of August Report

Hi, everyone!

It’s been very hot, but we have had a few days when it was cool enough for Grandma and Grandpa to work outside on projects.  I helped Grandpa finish leveling the back deck in Fairport.  I had to pull down on the board very hard to lever up the support beams!  The baby rabbit came back to inspect our work on the deck, but it’s not a baby any more!  At Sodus, Grandma scrubbed the deck and the stairs to the boathouse so that she could restain them.  There was a lot of moss and dirt to get off!  It took her two days to get everything clean enough to stain.

Last Tuesday was the very best day for working outside, and we made the most of it!  Grandma and I drove out to Sodus for the day to stain the deck.  First we had to sand down the benches and the railings, because all the scrubbing had made them rough!  A bench is no place for splinters!  Then we had to sweep up fallen leaves and wipe down the sanded surfaces.  I wanted to help with the stain, but Grandma said the color wouldn’t quite match my fur if I got some on me.  It took most of the day, but Grandma got the deck and stairs stained!  And guess what?  When we got back to Fairport, the driveway there had a new coat of sealer, too!

This past weekend, Joe-san and Nancy-san came out to Sodus and brought Moose-san and Tilly with them!  I like having my friends come visit me!  On Saturday morning, Grandma and Grandpa decided to start a project under the house.  Some of the insulation in the crawl space was sagging, so they wanted to staple something underneath it to hold it up.  Turns out the plastic deer fence we got for the rhododendron cage last fall is just the right thing to use!  The insulation is fiberglass, so Grandma and Grandpa had to dress very carefully to stay safe.  Tilly and Moose-san and I wanted to see what was going on, so we went down in the crawl space, too!  Tilly thought we might see lots of spider webs there, but we didn’t see any!  Grandpa thanked us for wanting to help, but there wasn’t any part of the job we could do.

After lunch, Grandma and Grandpa and Joe-san and Nancy-san went sailing.  Tilly and Moose-san and I decided to stay home.  That turned out to be a good thing, because a big powerboat wake came over the bow of the sailboat and everybody got wet!  After the sail, Grandma cleaned the weeds out from behind the powerboat so we could all take a ride in that.  Moose-san was excited to see so many aquatic weeds!  That’s his favorite thing to eat!

I wanted to show Tilly and Moose-san the breach in the Charles Point sandbar, so that’s where we went on our powerboat ride.  The breach is  getting bigger and deeper!  We watched a kayak and a canoe go right out to the lake through it!   Grandpa thinks that all the windy days with big waves on the lake are responsible for washing more sand out of the lake side.

On Saturday evening, there were clouds in the way of sunset, so we didn’t stay at the Point very long.  We went to get ice cream, instead!  Brain Freeze ice cream store in Alton has ice cream made in Maine, so of course Moose-san wanted to have some!  He decided Moose Tracks ice cream tastes better than aquatic weeds!  I thought the double chocolate ice cream was yummy, too!

On Sunday, Grandma said she wanted to buy some fresh produce for dinner, so we all went to Burnap’s farm market.  Moose-san and Tilly and I helped pick out some peaches and heirloom tomatoes.  After we bought them, Moose-san and I showed Tilly our favorite parts of the Burnap playground — the train and the slide!  Grandma bought some corn, too, so Tilly and Moose-san and I helped shuck it when we got home.  Then Grandma and Nancy-san made our peaches into a peach crisp for dinner.  It was yummy!

Joe-san and Nancy-san and Tilly and Moose-san had to go home Sunday evening, but we all went to the Point to watch sunset before they left.  There were storm clouds to the east that lit up pink at sunset!  We could see some lightning flashes in them, too! That storm missed us, so we had perfect weather for watching sunset with good friends!

Love,

Lion-san

  1. We did have a good weekend together. Rabbits have a tendency to grow up fast. That was nice of you to help Grandma and Grandpa and then all three of you to offer to help under the camp. The food was really good and Tilly enjoyed Burnaps! Moose-san said he did prefer the Moose Track’s ice cream to the aquatic weeds but he still likes the weeds.
