Another Flower Report, Mostly!

Hi, everyone!

We’ve had a few summer-like days recently, but also many below-average temperatures and lots of rain! All my flower friends are taking their time about blooming!

The Friday before Mothers Day, we went out to the bay. The clouds moved through just in time for sunset. It was cold and windy, so we watched from the car!

Saturday morning, Grandma and I took a walk in the woods. We wanted to see which of my wildflower friends had come up! We saw jack-in-the-pulpits and lots of mayapples! The apple trees in the orchard along the road were starting to bloom, just like our apple tree in Fairport.

Next, we went down to the shore to check out the water level. During May, the water is about as high as it’s going to get for the year. Grandpa says we’re going to have a low water year! Coming up the stairs, I had a chance to look at our new retaining wall from below. Then I visited my azalea friends to see how close they were to blooming. The primrose was already past peak!

The next Monday, we had a gorgeous day! Grandma and Grandpa got out and did work around the yard in Fairport. Our azaleas were blooming. I made friends with some mushrooms I’d never seen before in our brick walk.

Last Friday was James’ birthday. He wanted to have his birthday dinner at the bay. My flower friends started to bloom just in time! We had a nice meal and a game of Catan afterwards. Grandma gave Thomas a Catan gold coin so he could win the game. It was already way past bedtime!

Saturday morning, I slept in. Then I hung out with James and Thomas. Meanwhile, Uncle Steven and Aunt Kara were helping Grandpa put out the dock sections. They finished that and got the marine railway in, too! About five minutes after they finished, we had a big thunderstorm with hail! After that passed, it was still warm enough to eat lunch on the porch. Eating next to the blooming azalea is something I look forward to all year!

After church last Sunday, Grandpa and Grandma and I went back to the bay to stay overnight. Even more of my flower friends were blooming!

The sunny weather came with a cold front, so it was windy and chilly. When we got back to town, Grandma took me back to Highland Park. The lilac festival ended on Sunday, so it was easier to find parking and less crowded to visit all my flower friends. The azaleas where we park were in full bloom! Lots of people were taking photos everywhere in the park! The peony bed had lots of flowers. The white buckeye blooms were out, but the pink ones hadn’t opened yet.

Some of the lilacs were past, most still had some pretty flowers, and at least one hadn’t even started blooming yet! A few bushes were covered with blossoms, but many had fewer blooms than usual. I wonder if the colder than usual winter was to blame for that? With all the plants in bloom, it was easier to see the design in the pansy bed.

Just like at the bay, the azaleas and rhododendron in the gully at Highland Park were starting to bloom. I’ll have to go back to see the rest! We took the northeast staircase to leave the park. With the azaleas in bloom alongside, this is the prettiest time of year to exit that way!

Love,

Lion-san

  1. Spring is such a wonderful time of year. We are enjoying the succession of blooms here too. Love the dogwoods and lilacs and kousas and ____and _____. So glad we get to drive around and see a variety of blossoms. Locust trees are starting to bloom now. I love that the weather is cool. I don’t like real hot weather so am not pushing for it to get hot. High 60s and low 70s is about perfect.
