Some Quiet Winter Weeks!

Hi, everyone!

Grandma and Grandpa kept away from everybody else until they tested negative for Covid, and that took two weeks!  I was happy to have LaVache and LIC stay with me! Grandma had a quart of heavy cream to use up and decided to make cinnamon ice cream!  I showed LaVache and LIC how I watch the ice cream maker to tell when the ice cream has been churned enough!  Then I showed them how we package the ice cream to go into the freezer!  Grandma’s ice cream recipe calls for two egg yolks, so she always has two egg whites left.  She uses them to make flourless chocolate cookies.  Cinnamon ice cream and chocolate cookies are yummy together!

After that, Grandma made another batch of goat cheese biscuits for Thomas!  I showed LaVache and LIC how the goat cheese and butter get cut into the flour.  I was going to show how I roll out the dough, but LaVache and LIC didn’t want to get flour on themselves!  When the biscuits were baked, Grandma texted a picture of them to Uncle Steven.  He came to pick them up for Thomas!

We haven’t had a lot of snow this winter yet, but there have been a lot of rainy, drippy days.  We had rain off and on Saturday, January 7th, but Grandpa managed to switch the power back from the apple tree lights to the pole lamp that day.  On Sunday January 8, it was above freezing and dry.  Grandma asked if LaVache and LIC and I wanted to help take the lights off the apple trees for the season.  We had to bundle up to help!  We took the lights off the clothesline tree first, so Grandpa could remove that and store it away.  With our help, Grandma was able to get all the lights off before it got too dark to work.  It helped that the last ones to remove were on the apple tree right by the pole lamp!

LaVache and LIC went to choir practice with Grandma last Wednesday, and they went home with their Grandma from there.  On Friday the 13th, I woke up to new snow!  There wasn’t any wind, so the snow stayed on the branches.  It was very pretty!

Grandma told me that a snowy day is a good day for baking!  Most years, she bakes the Ground Hog Day cookies a batch a day.  This year, because of Covid, she didn’t want to start until she tested negative.  So we had lots of cookies to make!  On Friday, we made snowy apricot bars, frosted fruit bars, almond brickle bars, and brownies with and without nuts in them.  We got them all individually wrapped, too!  Grandma even found room in the freezer to freeze them!

Saturday was colder than Friday, so the snow was just right for a snow bath!  I helped Grandma make salted nut bars, peanut butter bars, chocolate chip bars, and caramel chocolate crunch bars.  Then Grandma took me out to roll in the snow!  First, she taught me how to make snow angels.  Here’s mine!

After I had my snow bath, Grandma wrapped me up in a towel and rubbed the snow off me.  I spent the rest of the day getting warm and dry next to the heat outlet in the kitchen.  Grandma spent the rest of the day wrapping cookies!  She made room for them in the freezer by moving the rest of the frozen stollen into the trunk of her car.  They were all going to church with her on Sunday, anyway, for friends who couldn’t get them earlier.

Today it rained, so all our snow is gone.  The weather forecasters say this is a very unusual year because of the lack of snow.  I can’t decide if that’s a good thing or not!

Love,

Lion=san
