Vine Vegetables, Mostly!

Hi, everyone!

October is definitely fall season, but the Peace rose bush had another flower bud.  Nobody managed to eat it, so I made another flower friend! Then Moose-san and Tilly sent me a pumpkin that was just my size!  I kept it with me day and night while it was getting used to being here!

A week ago Saturday, Grandma declared a soup-making afternoon!  I helped her turn one of the butternut squashes we got at Youngman’s Farm Market into curried squash and pear soup!  First we had to peel the squash and cut it into chunks.  Then we had to do the same thing with eight Bartlett pears!  There were onions to chop and saute, too!  One squash makes a LOT of soup!  I was happy we had the immersion blender to make the whole batch smooth at one time!

Joe-san got us a big head of cauliflower, so Grandma and I made cauliflower cheese soup, too!  We got that done and put into containers while the curried squash soup was cooling.  Between the two recipes, we made nine quarts of soup!  Grandma and I have special friends who really love Grandma’s curried squash soup.  We called them to come take some home and they showed up with a pretty bouquet for Grandma!

It was dryer than usual for most of the summer, but we’ve had a lot of rainy days recently.  One day, we had sunshine and heavy rain at the very same time!  Grandma says that’s called a sun shower!

It’s getting to be time to take in the docks and marine rails at the bay for the winter.  Grandpa and Uncle Steven took me to the bay last Friday, so Uncle Steven could haul the jet ski onto the trailer.  Grandma and Aunt Kara were planning to bring my cousins out later to stay overnight, to do the rest of the work on Saturday.  Aunt Kara tested positive for  Covid, so that coudn’t happen!  I never got out of my traveling bag before we came back into town!  Grandma and Grandpa took me back out to the bay Sunday night.  Since the kayaks were still in the boathouse, Grandma took me for a chilly kayak paddle on Monday morning.   The water level is very low and there were lots of weeds!  We looked for the water shoe that James lost, but we couldn’t find it.  I think that’s my last kayak ride for the season!

Yesterday, Grandma took me for my annual visit to the Powers Farm Market pumpkin patch!  We went during school hours, so it wasn’t as busy as afternoons and weekends!  I made lots of new pumpkin friends in the patch with lots of different varieties of pumpkins!

Then I went to visit my animal friends.  Most of them were more interested in families who brought them food than in seeing me!  My deer friend from last year still has spots like a fawn.  I wonder whether it’s a different kind of deer that keeps its spots when it grows up?

Of course we had to go to the cornstalk teepees!  There were skeletons climbing up the outside!  I made lots of jack-o-lantern friends inside!

Before we left Powers Farm Market, I made friends with the bigger pumpkins.  Then I went inside and made friends with the witch by the fireplace!  There were big bins of apples, too!

Love,

Lion-san

  1. Immersion blenders are one of the best inventions since sliced bread. They surely help when making pureed soups. Curried squash and pear soup sounds delicious. I do not think I’d like cauliflower soup. I should take a photo of my pimply or warty pumpkin and send it to you. It is quite unique and has drawn many comments. It sits on the little shelf outside the door to our apartment.

Happy October. We are enjoying the much cooler weather and a fair amount of rain. I think we caught the tail end of Ian. Great Aunt Betsy
