Hi, everyone!
Friday night we all drove to Hanapepe for Art Night! Grandma let me stay up after my bedtime to go! We stopped at Midnight Bear Bread for supper. We got a grilled cheese sandwich, a caprese sandwich and a prosciutto sandwich. Ursa cut each of them into enough pieces that we all could try each one. They were yummy! Then we looked in all the art galleries and shops. Someone was selling curly koa wood for woodworking at a table on the street! When we had looked at everything, we got malasadas for dessert. Malasadas are Portuguese doughnuts and they are yummy!
Grandma bought apple bananas and a white pineapple from the local fruit stand, but she wanted some special food that she couldn’t buy there. On Saturday morning, we drove into Lihue for the Community Farmers Market. We drove through the tree tunnel to get to the main road around the south end of Kauai.
I like to go to the Saturday market! It was fun to take Papa Dick-san and Grandma Sue there, too! We bought lilikoi-flavored goat cheese right away, before it sold out. Then I stopped to see my friend Elvrine-san at Heavenly Hakus! My new friend Amy-san sold us green papaya salad to have for lunch. Then we bought some bread and almond croissants from Ursa-san, the Midnight Bear baker. There’s always a long line waiting to buy bread from her stand! When we got back to Poipu, we had a yummy lunch, eating what we bought at the market!
After lunch, we took a walk down to Poipu beach to see whether there were any seals or turtles napping on the sand. There was a sea turtle with its head nestled in the rocks on the beach. I wonder if the turtle thought that was a special parking place, just for turtles?
We went back down to the beach to watch sunset, but there were clouds in the way.
On Sunday morning, there weren’t any clouds over Poipu, so Grandma said it would be a good day to drive to Waimea Canyon. We always drive past the Waimea Canyon lookouts up to the Kalalau valley lookouts, because the clouds come into the valley there first. Usually we beat the clouds. On Sunday, the clouds beat us! There was heavy mist and we couldn’t see a thing! I’m glad we all had seen the Kalalau valley on other trips!
It was misty and raining a little when we drove back down to the visitors’ center, so we stopped there. I liked the relief map of the two state parks! I met some wild pigs, but I’m not sure we made friends!
By the time we drove down to the Waimea Canyon overlooks, the sun was coming out on that side of the road. It was a really windy day, and that helped blow the clouds away. Because of the rain, Waipo’o falls had lots of water flowing and was really pretty! We stopped every chance we could to look at the canyon — not just at the two main viewing areas!
The main viewing area was crowded with people, cars and chickens! Grandma and Papa Dick-san got chances to take lots of photos. I think Papa Dick-san even took a video panorama from the lower viewing area. I could see back to the dead tree at the last roadside stop we’d made. It’s a good thing Grandma Sue kept me from falling off the edge there!
When we drove down to the coast again, we had lunch at the Shrimp Station. The shrimpburger was yummy!
On our way back to Poipu, we stopped at the Kauai Coffee Company. I made some new friends and watched a video about coffee roasting.
It was really windy when we got back to Poipu, but we all wanted to go to the beach to look for turtles and seals. Guess what? There were TWO turtles and TWO seals! The wind was blowing sand all over, so it was a little hard to make friends with them all.
It rained right at sunset and rained off and on during dinner time. We had Lappert’s ice cream for dessert. I was happy to go to bed after such a busy weekend!
Love,
Lion-san
It is nice to see you in the sunshine, also in the clouds. Joe-san would like the curly koa wood also but Nancy-san says we have enough wood. We got some in Texas we think. It is nice you got to Waimea canyon also. You saw chickens, got to eat shrimp, got to drink coffee and still got back to see the monk seals and turtles.
Dear Lion-san, Grandma, Grandpa, Grandma Sue and Grandpa Dick- San,
It makes us a bit jealous to read of your adventures on Kauai. We feel fortunate to have been there once ourselves. We have had pretty snow and no particular misfortunes. You probably know that schools were closed on Monday. That always makes for nostalgia for us former teachers. ( What could be more thrilling even after many years of retirement.) Grandma and I sat in our living room pretending that we lived in a snow globe…..
I know you are having a “grand time” ( that’s Grandma talk). La Vache’s Aunt Nancy reports that the choir was “spectacular” (more Grandma-speak) this past Sunday. Grandma can’t report on that as she is working hard (hee hee)at sitting with her leg up. Her knee doesn’t mind that particular form of hard work.
We look forward to reading your published copy of this report.
Love to all…
Family La Vache and LIC.
