Aloha!

Hi, everyone!

Tuesday morning, Grandma got me up very early!  Aunt Kara came to take us to the airport at 5:30 a.m.!

Grandma and Grandpa were taking me on another big adventure!  First, we flew from Rochester to Chicago.  Then we got on a plane headed for Honolulu!  We had to wait on the ground for almost an hour before we took off, but we still got to Honolulu an hour early!  From Honolulu, we flew to Lihue, on the island of Kauai.  That’s my favorite place!

It was already dark when we got to Kauai, and it had been raining hard!  On Thursday morning when I got up, I could see a rainbow from our balcony!  When we walked to the beach, one of the side streets was still flooded!

Kauai had bad floods last year, and I could see that Poipu Beach had changed.  There were more rocks in the center part of the beach and now there are lifeguard towers at both ends, instead of one in the middle.  I was happy to see a sea turtle right away, and a monk seal, too!  There were lots of chickens around, but I didn’t hear any of them crowing at sunrise!

After we walked to the beach, Grandma and Grandpa took me along the walk from Makahuena Point to Shipwreck Beach.  That’s still very pretty!  I made sure to say hello to my lion friend along the way.  The rocks in the turtle cove have eroded into a different shape, but the turtles still swim there.  It was windy, so it was a little hard to see whale spouts, but Grandma pointed some out.

For lunch, we went to Dim’n’Den Sum.  Lynell-san remembered me from two years ago!  Guess what?  Lynell-san and Yoshi (Steve)-san have a baby boy now!  They just reopened their food truck after being closed for a year.  I was really happy to see them and eat their yummy shu mai!

After lunch, Grandma said we had to find a lei and get ready to go back to the airport!  Papa Dick-san and Grandma Sue came to stay with us!  There was a big snow and ice storm in Rochester, and they left just in time to miss the worst part of it!

This morning, we all took another walk to the beach.  Today was warmer, sunny, and less windy, so there were lots of people at the beach!  All the seals and turtles stayed away!

When we walked on to Makahuena Point, we started to see whales right away!  Papa Dick-san helped me look at them through the binoculars.  There were mother whales and baby whales.  We didn’t see any big jumps out of the water, but there were lots of splashes from fin slaps.

After lunch, we Facetimed Uncle Steven and Aunt Kara.  They were having a late dinner after James and Thomas went to tae kwon do.  James won a trophy for being the best student in the class!  Today is Aunt Kara’s birthday, so we sang Happy Birthday to her.  They’re going to have an AWACS cheesecake that I helped Grandma make for her birthday cake!

Grandma says we’re going to Hanapepe tonight for Art Night.  Tomorrow is Community Market Day.  I’m going to have lots of adventures soon!

Love,

Lion-san

  1. Aloha from snowy Fairport! Happy to hear that all of you made it out of Rochester before the storm. Our bags are mostly packed and, with luck, we’ll be headed your way next Friday. Are you going to join us for dinner on the 16th? Mahalo for the nice photos.

  2. It looks nice and sunny in Hawaii. You did miss the snow. We still have some about 8″ according to Joe. It was a good start to your vacation seeing monk seals, whales, turtles and food trucks.
