We Weren’t Finished!

Hi, everyone!

Now that we’re having colder nights, there’s mist on the bay every morning.  That’s what happens when the water is warmer than the air!  The water level in the bay is continuing to drop, too!  When Grandpa put the dock in, the top was barely above water!

Right after I wrote last about thinking we’d had enough projects, Grandma and Grandpa took me out to the bay to spend the night.  On Friday morning, we got a phone call from the roofing contractor.  He was going to start putting on the new roof at Sodus a week earlier than expected!  The roofing materials were going to be delivered that day.  Grandma went outside and the great big delivery truck was already there!  The truck had a forklift attached to the back.  It was fun watching the driver get the forklift down and use it to unload the shingles and other roofing materials!  I made sure the new vinyl soffit for under the eaves was the color we had chosen!  When everything was stacked in a neat pile, the driver guided the forklift to hoist itself back on the truck.  Grandma showed the driver how to get headed in the right direction to leave.  He was very happy he didn’t have to turn the big truck around!

Uncle Steven’s family came out that Friday night to stay with us.  It rained Saturday morning, but there was a break in the rain during the afternoon.  Grandma and Aunt Kara took Thomas and me to Burnap’s Farm Market to pick apples!  Thomas was very happy to see that there were lots of his favorite “purple apples” still on the trees!  Grandma made sure we picked enough Crispins so that she and Uncle Steven could make apple pies.  Our bag was so full that Thomas needed help carrying it back from the orchard!

I liked the big crate of gourds at Burnap’s!  Thomas found a nice pumpkin, and I helped pick one for James!  Then we put them in the trunk of Aunt Kara’s car.  When we got back to our place, Thomas had an apple snack right away!

James decided he would rather help Uncle Steven and Grandpa haul in the dock sections than go apple picking.  Everybody ended up helping to get that job done!

On Monday, the roofing contractor brought his team to start fixing the roof.  The first day, they tore off the old shingles and got the roof ready for new material.  They brought plywood sheets to protect the windows and screened porch from getting damaged.  They shoveled all the old shingle pieces into a lifter that took them directly to the roll-off trash container.

On Tuesday, the team put on new shingles, installed vinyl soffit under the eaves and wrapped the redwood rake edges in metal.  The next woodpecker that tries to peck on them is going to be very surprised!

When Grandma and Grandpa took me back out to the bay last Friday, there wasn’t much of a stack of roofing materials left.  I got to see the new roof windows in the kitchen from the inside and outside!  There’s still some trim work on the inside of the roof windows that needs to be done, but we had a nice new roof just in time for a couple of days of clouds and rain!

Last Sunday was the apple pie making day at Grandma and Grandpa’s church.  I always go to see my church friends and help Grandma roll pie crusts.  This year, Uncle Steven and Thomas helped peel apples!  Thomas learned how to use the mechanical apple peeler.  He had to be careful to keep his fingers away from the sharp peeling blade!  Everybody was happy to be able to clean up early, because we didn’t make as many pies this year.  Sixty-five pies is still a good accomplishment!

When Grandpa was planning all the work the Sodus place needed, he thought the new roof would be put on the second week of August.  He talked to a painting contractor about restaining the siding sometime soon afterwards.  One of the roof windows had to be specially made, and that put the roofing project into October.  When it got finished last week, the painting contractor said he could still get the restaining done this fall.  So today, the painters came out to power wash the siding!  They had to climb on the new roof to get all the siding clean!  There were a LOT of ladders up!  I made friends with the power washer when they were done!

Some of our maples are turning very pretty colors now!

Love,

Lion-san

  1. Glad your family got the new roof and staining down and the dock out. Now you should be ready for winter. I saw a lot of moss on the old roof. The finished place looks wonderful.

  2. We thought that Thomas got a lot of apples last year. You’ve seen a lot done this year, both at Sodus Bay and in Fairport. The apple pie making was something different.
