Pie!

Hi, everyone!

The week before last, Grandma went to her 50th college reunion.  She saw some of her classmates and got a 50th reunion coffee mug and medallion.  Grandma says I can have her 50th reunion tote bag  to be my new travel bag! On the Sunday right after the reunion, Grandma and Grandpa took me out to the bay.  While they were out at dinner, we had a great big storm!  A tree blew down across the road to the restaurant and the power went out on our side of the bay!  I was happy our new night lights turn into emergency lighting if the power goes out!  When Grandma and Grandpa got back from dinner, we all thought the power would be restored before bedtime.  We listened to an audio book on Grandma’s laptop computer.  Then Grandpa checked the power company outage report again, and they’d changed the estimated repair time for our area to 11 p.m. on Monday!  It was already past my bedtime, but Grandma and Grandpa decided we’d go back to Fairport instead of waiting that long!  Fairport had power by the time we got back, but it had been out for five hours there, too!

When we went back to the bay last Friday, we had to reset all the clocks!  We didn’t have any big branches down and the bay was very calm for Grandma to kayak.  We’re even starting to see some fall color in the leaves on the trees!

Last Sunday was pie making day at Grandma and Grandpa’s church.  I always like to go to help out and see my church friends, so I got into my new travel bag as soon as I woke up!  Grandma took her big bowls and pots along to hold the peeled and sliced apples.  I made friends with the great big pie the Weetman-sans made to feed the pie making crew, then I helped Grandma save her favorite space on the crust rolling table.

After church, every part of pie making started at once!  I was happy to see all my apple peeling buddies working at tables in the Big Room!

Then I went back into the kitchen to see my crust making and rolling buddies!

The first set of pie fillers were my travel buddies Nancy-san and Ron-san!  I helped Grandma roll out a top crust to put on a filled pie, then Grandma Sue and I crimped the crusts together and made a pretty design on top.

By the time we were done making 153 pies, some people were getting a little silly.  Reverend Greg got flour “high fives” on the back of his shirt!  I helped LaVache’s grandma wrap the very last pie.  Then another of my travel buddies came to take some of the pies home to freeze until Election Day.

Remember the big storm I told you about?  It knocked down some trees at church, too!  Reverend Greg finished cutting them up with a chainsaw while we were making pies.  Then my friends who took our big oak branch when it fell brought their wood splitter to church and cleared up all the big tree pieces. I helped Grandma pack up all her bowls and pots to go home.  They’ll have to come back to church in two weeks for Election Day baking!  This year, LaVache’s grandma is in charge of sales!

Yesterday, Grandma and Grandpa made me the first leaf pile of the season.  Between leaves and baking, I think the next two weeks are going to be very busy!

Love,

Lion-san

  1. We all like your new travel bag. Nancy-san and Joe-san brought home cut apples and made applesauce with them. There were even enough to can so Nancy-san did that too. The pie making and bake sale are always fun to do. Moose-san suggests that you should stay away from piles of yellow leaves.
