Hi, everyone!
The last two days we were in Florida, it rained part of each day! We went to the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum to stay dry. There were displays of lots of pretty shells. I didn’t know scallop shells came in so many colors! I thought the Lions Paw shells were especially nice! Grandma says she’s seen clam shells as big as the one I climbed in when she was snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. When the clams are in them, the edges have little organisms living on them that are bright blue, green or purple.
After going to the shell museum, I wanted to find some shells for myself on the beach. Grandma took me on a walk on Captiva Beach in between rain showers so I could look. I found a little conch shell and a pretty striped scallop shell. We had another pretty sunset, too!
The next day it was a little warmer, so Grandma took me wading at the beach. Then I saw an abandoned sand castle and made a pink hibiscus friend.
On Friday, the weather was warm and dry again, but we were headed home! I had breakfast on the porch with Grandpa, and I took my shell friends back to the beach, where they belonged. I added them to the decorations on somebody’s big sand castle that had partially survived high tide! I said goodbye to my new osprey friends before we went flying, too!
While we were away, Rochester had very warm weather! All the snow has melted and the earliest spring bulbs are in bloom. Yesterday Grandma and I finished pruning the apple trees. Then I helped pile all the branches up for the town to take away. It was a big pile! Now all the apple trees are ready for spring.
Today Grandpa saw robins in the back yard, so maybe we really are going to have an early spring! The earliest my crocus friends have ever bloomed is March 3, so I guess I need to start looking for them!
Love,
Lion-san
Hello Lion-San, I think you were lucky to visit that shell museum. I love sea shells and have quite a few very tiny ones and some very large sea shells. They are so beautiful. Please come visit and see my sea shells one of these days. I am surprised Fairport has early spring flowers in bloom already. We have numerous crocus pushing up through the soil. We have had big winds and many sticks and branches have fallen from our many trees. A huge clean up job remains to be done. Happy First day of March!
Great Aunt Betsy, I know what a big job it is to pick up branches! We have had some very big limbs come down from our trees this year, both at Fairport and Sodus.
It was nice you got to the shell museum. I don’t think the first place you saw was Mayan ruins either. We had big winds last night. Even the top of a tree that is on the neighbor’s land came down. Now Moose-san will have something to do. Our snowdrop flowers Joe-san planted last year are flowering but it will be a while before the crocus come in our yard.
