Looking for Spring!

Hi, everyone!

Before Grandma and Grandpa and I left Maui, we had some time to sit next to the beach and watch the whales. I liked the Hawaii cookies! Just before we left, it started raining! The showers were heavy, but they didn’t last long! On our way to the airport, we had lunch at Haile i’maile General Store. I didn’t get to see my friend Bev-san, the owner, this trip, but I did have a piece of her famous crab pizza! By the time we got to the airport it was sunny again! On the last leg of the trip home, from Chicago to Rochester, it was only sunny above the clouds and I could see lots of snow on the ground!

Joe-san and Moose-san picked us up at the airport. Moose-san brought along a blanket, in case I wasn’t dressed for the cold, but Grandma had my winter clothes along. We got home the day after a big snowstorm and there was lots of snow at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. The driveway was plowed, so we could get in, but there was a big mound of snow where Grandpa’s car was parked! Grandpa took Grandma’s car out to do errands, and Grandma and I dug his car out. It took us a long time, because there was so much snow on top of it and around it!

Since we’ve been home, we haven’t had many adventures. Grandma found my comb and combed the snarls out my mane. I got a postcard from Moose-san, that he sent while we were both still in Kauai! The picture on it reminded me of our helicopter flight on Nancy-san’s birthday. Two days ago, Grandma and I saw a chipmunk scurrying very fast across the back yard. The chipmunk ran right past this hawk and into a wood pile! The same day, I helped Grandpa get Grandma Ginny’s car, so he could help Aunt Kara transfer title. Grandma and I had to dig out a special parking place for it!

Today, Grandma and I took a walk around the yard to see if we could find any signs of spring. The snow is melting, especially on the south side of the house, but none of my crocus friends are up yet. All that’s left of my snow moose is one of the antlers, and there’s no snow around the snow gauge any more at all! It’s just above freezing today and next week is supposed to be even warmer!

Now I’m helping Grandma and Grandpa get ready for their travel dinner. They’re serving Hawaiian food, so I have two new pineapple friends! They’re not nearly as ripe as the ones we ate in Kauai, but Grandma hopes they’ll be ready to use by next week. I was a good helper and told them what ripe was supposed to look and taste like! We brought coffee-glazed macadamia nuts back with us from Hawaii because they aren’t sold here, but Grandma got some plain macadamia nuts to use in salad and brownies for the party. I’m helping Grandma experiment with the interesting flavors we tasted in Hawaii, so she uses just the right amount for the party food she’s cooking. I even helped her make a fresh batch of furikake! The nori seaweed flakes picked up a static charge when they were stirred, so all the little pieces tried to climb up the sides of the plastic container! By next week, they should be willing to mix with the sesame seeds and salt and pepper!

Love,
Lion-san

  1. That was nice that Joe-san and Moose-san brought you a blanket to ward off the cold! The remaining antler left from your snow moose is the most important part acording to Moose-san. Hopefully your crocus friends will be up soon. Nancy-san said she has already seen daffodil and hyacinth leaves peeking above the snow, what we have left of the snow. You did a great job of excavating Grandpa’s car! Hope you had a nice hot chocolate after that! Your mane looks great.
