Hi, everyone!
It’s officially summer now, and the weather is beginning to agree. Some of my friends are on summer vacation. Moose-san sent me a postcard from Maine. My friend Monster Rock in Michigan sent me an e-mail with a picture of him stretching after he woke up from winter hibernation. We are still having some rainstorms, but that makes the sunsets really pretty! In Fairport, I’m enjoying sitting in my favorite sunbeam. I had to remind a roaming cat that the deck is MY territory!
It’s warm enough to sit on the porch at Sodus with Grandpa while he reads, and we’ve just had the longest day of the year. Sunset was almost after my bedtime!
This morning, Grandma took me on my first kayak paddle for the year. There were lots of Canada geese families out on the bay by our dock. I got to ride in the kayak while it was coming down to the water on the chain hoist, then we were ready to go! Grandma paddled all the way to Newark Island. We saw swans on the protected side of the island, and there was a great blue heron sitting in a tree!
When we paddled around the northern tip of Newark Island, guess what we found? Monster Rock’s cousin! The water in Sodus Bay is so high that Monster Rock’s cousin and its friend Lake are right next to each other! I looked, but there wasn’t a dry place anywhere for me to sit on Monster Rock’s cousin, like I sat on Monster Rock in Michigan.
The water in the bay is so high this year that the willows on the south end of Newark Island reached all the way down to the kayak to make friends with me! And the bridge at Leroy Island doesn’t have much room under it between the water and the bridge deck. I felt like I was going under the canal bridges in Germany again!
It’s too early for the swamp mallow to be in bloom, but the water lilies and bullhead lilies (the yellow ones) are blooming. And look at all the turtles sunning themselves on the sunken fishing shack. You can only see the roof this year! I wanted to make turtle friends, but they all swam away when we got close. There was another great blue heron, hiding in the reeds. Can you see him?
There’s always a little bit of water in the bottom of Grandma’s kayak, so I have to dry my paws in the sun when we get back from a paddle. And today, I got a souvenir of the trip. A swan gave me one of its feathers!
Love,
Lion-san
Hi!
Moone-san was glad you got his postcard and he is looking forward to eating weeds next weekend, seeing Uncle Steven, Aunt Kara and James and telling you all about his trip! That was nice one of your swan friends gave you a feather. I’m not surprised at how high the lake is with all the rain we’ve had! Our rain guage said 4 inches while we were gone, 1.3 inches by Friday AM and Nancy-san is thinking of weeding the garden.(None of which are worth eating in Moose-sans opinion.)
