Springtime Walks

Hi, everyone!
It’s FINALLY spring here, for sure! We have a new fence to replace the old one that was falling down. I was a good helper and made sure the rails were put into the posts just right! Lots of my spring flower and shrub friends at Grandma and Grandpa’s house have started to bloom. Grandma and Grandpa took me out to Sodus a week ago, and we had a very pretty sunset. It was still cold and windy, so we watched the sunset from a high point on the road, instead of driving to the lighthouse.

During the past week, even more of my daffodil friends bloomed, and my forsythia friend did, too! This weekend started out chilly, but got a lot warmer. On Friday, my best buddies Joe-san and Nancy-san and Moose-san came out to Sodus to visit. After dinner, we went to Sodus Point to watch the sunset for the first time this year. The lake water is still very cold and we had to wear coats and hats on the pier!

On Saturday, Grandma and Nancy-san and Moose-san and I took a nature hike at Alasa Farms. Guess what? Two of our friends from church were on the hike, too! It was fun to show them and Moose-san the falls on Second Creek. The guide pointed out the wildflowers that were just starting to bloom. He could identify birds just from hearing them sing! Because it took so long for spring to come this year, there weren’t as many flowers and birds to see as the guide expected, but we had a good time on the hike and learned a lot. On the way back, we stopped to see the farm animals at Crackerbox Palace. The peacock and rooster were enjoying the sunshine!

We invited our church friends to come back to the cottage for lunch. They saw as many wildflowers and birds in our woods as they had seen on the nature hike! Aren’t our trout lilies pretty? Moose-san even remembered that the flowers that look like dandelions at the edge of the parking area are really coltsfoot, instead!

Today, after church Grandma and I met a friend to go walking in Highland Park. There are lots of trees in blossom there right now! When we got there, I found a tree with a passage right through the middle! I wanted to sit in it, but I had to wait my turn. The other people visiting the tree were very friendly!

The Poet’s Garden at Highland Park is prettiest in the early spring, and we picked the absolutely perfect day to visit there. We met a very nice lady who told us the names of all the plants. I like knowing new words like scilla and helleborus and anemone!

After we visited the Poet’s Garden, I went to see my lilac friends. They aren’t blooming yet, but the ones that were hurt by last year’s late snow are all growing new branches and getting better! There was a ground hog hiding in the roots of one of the big lilac bushes. The ground hog didn’t want to come out because everybody keeps teasing him about his prediction of an early spring! The pansy bed is all planted and starting to bloom. It’s very pretty! And look how many blossoms there are on the forsythia at the park! I didn’t get to see the cherry blossoms with Bill-kun and Karin-chan in Japan or with James in Washington, but I think I found them in Highland Park. The big bed of tulips isn’t blooming yet, so I’ll have to come back to practice appreciating them. There will be so much more to see in Highland Park over the next month!

Love,
Lion-san

  1. It was fun going to Sodus! The walk was fun too and Moose-san and I learned a lot although I doubt I can remember all the names of things we saw. It was fun seeing 2nd Creek, I have heard about it so it was nice to see!
Highland Park is always so pretty this time of year with all the flowers and flowering bushes and trees now! We’ll see it as we pass by on Wed night before the hockey game.
