Hi, Everyone!
Guess what? I’m off on another adventure with Grandma and Grandpa! On Wednesday morning we got up very early to go to the airport. We flew to Chicago, then to Los Angeles, then to Lihue, Hawaii on the island of Kauai! We’ve flown so many miles in the past year that we got upgraded to first class seats for some of the flights. I like first class! There’s plenty of room for me to sit with Grandpa without being squished. I like to listen to what the pilots are saying, and I REALLY like the nice warm cookies! Yum! I tried very hard to be quiet and polite during the flight. When we got to Hawaii, the flight attendant said I was a good helper and gave me pilot wings!
Thursday was Ground Hog Day, and when I got up, I saw my shadow. Six more weeks of winter! But Grandma said not to worry, because winter in Hawaii is pretty nice! Look at how warm and sunny it is! Shipwreck Bay never freezes over!
We took a walk to Makahuena light to look for whales, and we saw some spouting and diving way out from shore. Makahuena light is built on a headland and you can see a lot of ocean from there. Then we watched the green sea turtles swimming in the surf.
There are lots of flowers in bloom, so I made a lot of new flower friends. This hibiscus reminds me of the rose mallows along Sodus Bay. Grandma says hibiscus and mallows are cousins. Later, we went back to the beach to watch the sun set. Right after Grandma took this picture, we saw the green flash as the sun disappeared!
Today, we went to Spouting Horn. Spouting Horn is a blow hole — a place where surf gets pushed into a narrow opening in the rock so it sprays out like a fountain. Most waves don’t make Spouting Horn spray, but I’m learning to tell which ones are the right size and direction to make a big fountain. There’s a big whoosh sound, too!
I was upset when I saw the sign about feeding cats in the parking lot at Spouting Horn. It didn’t sound very friendly to little lions! So I was really happy when we found a lion-friendly Mexican restaurant for lunch. The three kinds of salsa were all yummy!
After lunch, we took another walk on the beach. We saw a monk seal sleeping on the sand. I wanted to make friends with the seal, but I knew it wouldn’t be polite to interrupt his nap. We walked back through Plantation Gardens. I made friends with some of the cactus there last time I came to Hawaii with Grandma and Grandpa. It was good to see my friends again, especially the ones without prickles on them! Then I made friends with some orchids and the koi fish in the garden pond. By then, I was really tired from our long walk. As soon as I got back to where we are staying, I took a nap, just like the monk seal!
Tomorrow, Uncle Steven and Aunt Kara are coming to stay with us. This adventure is getting better and better!
Love,
Lion-san
